One of the most common questions we receive is simple: when should I come? The answer depends on what you want from your water sports experience. Having operated in Puerto Banus for years, we understand the rhythms of the Mediterranean and can help you choose the perfect time for your adventure.
Marbella enjoys one of the most favourable climates in Europe, with over 300 days of sunshine annually and the Sierra Blanca mountains providing shelter from northern weather systems. But within this generally excellent climate, each season offers distinct characteristics that affect your time on the water.
The Peak Season: June to September
Summer along the Costa del Sol delivers exactly what you imagine: reliable sunshine, warm waters, and long days that stretch past nine in the evening. This is high season for good reason.
Weather and Sea Conditions
Air temperatures consistently reach 28-32 degrees Celsius, while the Mediterranean warms to a comfortable 22-24 degrees by mid-summer. The sea feels genuinely inviting rather than merely tolerable. You can spend hours in the water without feeling cold, and the warmth adds pleasure to every splash and spray.
Winds during summer typically follow predictable patterns. Mornings tend toward calm, with light thermal breezes developing through the afternoon as land heats faster than sea. These afternoon breezes rarely affect water sports operations but can make parasailing particularly enjoyable, adding lift while keeping conditions safe.
What to Expect
Summer brings crowds to Marbella, and the beaches reflect this popularity. Our operations run at full capacity, meaning advance booking becomes essential rather than optional. The atmosphere buzzes with holiday energy, families and groups sharing the beach and waters.
For activities like jetski rental, the designated riding areas can see more traffic, though our safety protocols ensure plenty of space for each rider. Popular time slots, particularly late morning and late afternoon when temperatures feel most comfortable, fill quickly.
Our Recommendation
If you want guaranteed warmth and do not mind sharing the experience with fellow visitors, July and August deliver everything summer promises. Book activities at least a week ahead, and consider early morning sessions for calmer waters and smaller crowds.
The Shoulder Seasons: April-May and October
For many experienced visitors, the shoulder seasons represent Marbella at its finest. The climate remains excellent while the intensity of peak summer softens.
Spring: April and May
Spring arrives early along the Costa del Sol. By mid-April, daytime temperatures regularly reach 22-25 degrees, and the Mediterranean has begun its annual warming cycle. Water temperatures hover around 17-19 degrees, cool enough to refresh but warm enough for extended activities with wetsuits available if desired.
The landscape looks its best in spring. Recent rains leave the hills green rather than the golden brown of late summer. Wild flowers bloom across the Sierra Blanca foothills. The air carries a freshness that disappears once summer heat settles in.
Crowds remain manageable. Hotels offer better rates, restaurants have tables available, and our water sports operations run without the pressure of peak demand. Booking a few days ahead typically secures your preferred time.
Autumn: October
October brings what many consider ideal conditions. The Mediterranean retains its summer warmth, often measuring 21-23 degrees, having absorbed months of sunshine. Air temperatures moderate to 22-26 degrees, comfortable rather than intense.
The summer crowds have departed. Children return to school across Europe, leaving Marbella quieter yet still vibrant. October days can feel almost private, with beaches that felt packed in August now hosting scattered visitors enjoying the continuing good weather.
Rain becomes possible in October, though the Costa del Sol's reputation for sunshine generally holds. Our local microclimate, protected by mountains and warmed by the Mediterranean, typically delivers excellent conditions throughout the month.
Our Recommendation
If flexibility matters more than certainty, the shoulder seasons offer exceptional value. May and October represent particular sweet spots, combining genuinely warm conditions with peaceful operations. Perfect for those who appreciate space and tranquillity alongside their adventures.
The Winter Months: November to March
Water sports in Marbella largely pause during winter. While we maintain our facilities and prepare for the coming season, most activities cease from late November through early March.
Why We Close
Several factors make winter operation impractical. Water temperatures drop to 14-16 degrees, cold enough to require substantial exposure protection. Air temperatures, while mild by northern European standards (12-18 degrees), feel less conducive to water activities. Daylight hours shorten significantly.
More importantly, winter brings the possibility of weather systems that make water activities inadvisable. While Marbella rarely experiences severe conditions, the frequency of unsuitable days increases enough that reliable scheduling becomes impossible.
What Winter Visitors Can Do
Marbella remains an attractive destination throughout winter. Golf courses operate year-round, the Old Town retains its charm, and restaurants welcome visitors with seasonal menus. Temperatures that feel cold to locals often seem perfectly pleasant to visitors from Britain, Germany, or Scandinavia.
Some visitors use winter to explore the region on land, returning when waters warm for their water sports experience. This approach combines the best of both seasons.
Activity-Specific Considerations
Different water sports have slightly different optimal conditions.
Jetski Rental
Jetskis operate best when water is flat to slightly choppy. Light morning conditions allow maximum speed and manoeuvrability, while afternoon chop adds excitement for experienced riders. Any time from April through October works well, with summer offering the most comfortable conditions overall.
Parasailing
Parasailing requires specific wind conditions, enough breeze to provide lift but not so much that operations become inadvisable. Morning calm sometimes means waiting for adequate wind, while strong afternoon breezes might require earlier sessions. Our team monitors conditions constantly and advises on optimal timing.
Banana Boats and Towables
Towable rides work in almost any conditions that permit general water sports. The experience changes slightly with chop, becoming more dynamic as the inflatable bounces over waves. Families with young children might prefer calmer morning sessions, while groups seeking thrills often enjoy afternoon conditions. Read more in our complete guide to banana boats.
Dolphin Watching
Our dolphin watching tours run successfully throughout the season. Dolphins inhabit these waters year-round, though behaviour patterns shift seasonally. Spring often brings increased activity as dolphins become more visible near shore. The best viewing typically occurs in calm conditions when dolphins surface clearly and boats can position without disturbing natural behaviour.
Boat Rental
For boat charter experiences, any day within season works well. Longer cruises benefit from stable conditions, so our team might suggest morning departures when afternoon weather patterns seem uncertain. Sunset cruises, popular throughout summer, require booking well ahead during peak months.
